There are three basic steps to using out-of-network benefits:

  1. Pay the session fee: You are typically responsible for paying the therapist’s entire session fee upfront.
  2. File a claim: Depending on the provider, therapists are often willing to file paperwork on your behalf, or provide documentation for you to submit the claim yourself.
  3. Receive reimbursement: Your insurance company will send you or the provider a check to cover the cost of up to 80% of the session fee.
